How do I know what my gifts are?

Let’s talk a moment about your giftedness since it is absolutely tied to your purpose. There are 7 truths about giftedness that are vitally important for you to be aware of so you may leverage them and here they are:

First, it is important for you to know that your gifts are tied to your values. What you value is what you talk about and focus on, in part because you are typically good at that thing. What you are good at, you also value, which is why you are energized about sharing it.

Second, it is important to understand that you always bring your gifts. Because you value what you are gifted in, you always bring it. There is something that you see from your perspective and even get passionate about and therefore you bring it to the table when working with others. It will generally always show up.

Third, others tell you of your giftedness. People let you know the value that you bring. If they ask you for insight, it is because you are gifted with insight. If they ask you for help, it is because you get things done. They are asking you to share your gift with them because they see it in you.

Fourth, your gifts come easy to you. What you are gifted in may not seem like a gift to you because it comes easy to you. To you it seems ordinary rather than extraordinary. Just because it appears normal to you, don’t miss the gift that you have.

Fifth, your gifts may not be fully developed. Be aware that your gifts may be in the development stage, so the absence of your gift being ready and activated doesn’t mean you aren’t blessed with it. There was a time when Tiger Woods was an amateur working on his gift and getting advice from others, and we all know that he has a gift. Yet, there was a time when his gift was not fully developed. The same is true with you.

Sixth, you can add to your gifts – It is well within the realm of possibility that you have more than one gift. You can develop and even discover other gifts as you grow. One thing is for sure, you will not discover them if you do not take action. Get busy serving others. Look for ways to serve your purpose and you will begin to discover which part is the most valuable to people. Therein you will find your giftedness and your unique purpose to fulfill.

Finally, your gifts are for times but not all the time. What this means is that we can all get caught up from time to time in what is important to us, our values, our gifts, etc. I mean, our perspective is the most important, right? We have the solutions, if only everyone would listen. Sound familiar? Our gifts are for times, not all the time. If the world was filled with only our perspective, our preference, our gifts, it would be a dull place. It has been said that sameness is the death of any speaker. It is true in life as well. If we will be open and receptive to others’ ideas and strengths, we will soon see how combining gifts can have a compound effect on outcomes. When everyone brings their strengths to the right place at the right time, it is amazing what can be accomplished. Synergy trumps energy any day.
